Reports: Jeff Linder is leaving Wyoming basketball for Texas Tech assistant job

    0

(Laramie, WY) – According to reports from ESPN and 7220Sports.com, Wyoming’s head men’s basketball coach is out.

ESPN writer Pete Thamel first shared the news that he has been in discussions with the coaching staff in Lubbock, Texas…

Linder spent four seasons as Wyoming’s head coach going 63-59 overall.

Jeff’s best season came in 2021-22 going 25-9 and losing in the NCAA Tournament First Four. In his last two seasons, Wyoming has finished under .500.

Before coming to Wyoming, Linder went 80-50 as Northern Colorado’s Head Coach. He was an assistant with Boise State, San Francisco, Weber State, Midland and Emporia State prior to that. The Denver-native played in the mid-to-late 90’s at both Mesa State and Western State in Colorado.

Wyoming Indian High School student work to help astronauts on upcoming Artemis moon mission

(Ethete, WY) – Wyoming Indian High School (WIHS) students were honored this week by the NASA HUNCH program, for their work on projects that will be utilized by astronauts on both the International Space Station and the upcoming Artemis missions to the moon.

HUNCH stands for “High School Students United with NASA to create Hardware,” and the program’s mission is to “empower and inspire students through a Project Based Learning program where high school students learn 21st century skills and have the opportunity to launch their careers through the participation in the design and fabrication of real world valued products for NASA.”

The HUNCH program at Wyoming Indian is one of only two in the state, the other being in Jackson.

Gary Duquette, an engineering teacher in Jackson who works with their HUNCH program, told County 10 that students basically act as subcontractors for NASA through the program, and help solve problems for NASA scientists through product design and/or construction.

Students are compensated for their work, and participation in the program can even lead to job placement within NASA, or with other employers related to their chosen expertise.

Student Dionne Ferris kicked off the celebration by introducing Florence “Flo” Gold, who serves as the NASA HUNCH Academy Manager and Mentor for the Western/North-Eastern Region.

A former high school teacher herself, Flo took her expertise in math and science and went on to go work for NASA, and in 2019 asked Wyoming Indian High School to be a part of the HUNCH program.

“With Flo’s guidance and mentorship this program has given many students the opportunity to flourish in the areas of science and engineering,” Ferris commented during the intro.

“Today is a celebration for our students in Scott Krassin’s class,” Flo explained, and shared that this is the fifth year his students have done work with NASA HUNCH.

“I want to congratulate all of the students who are doing this project, and for their incredible teacher,” Flo continued. “Because without Scott we would not be here today honoring these students.

Scott Krassin, who currently works as the WIHS Science Teacher, Robotics Coach and NASA HUNCH Instructor, was then recognized for all of the work he and his WIHS HUNCH students have accomplished since starting the program in 2019.

Those projects included various design and prototype teams, who in 2019/2020 helped with a lunar brush, a lunar sleep rack, and a mouse feeder that fed mice being used for studies concerning osteoporosis.

“It’s really important to realize that these projects that help the astronauts, also have value here on Earth,” Flo explained.

Other projects included designs for agricultural devices, lunar habitat shoes, a Zero G bulk transfer system, and a crystal growth nanolab (all in 2021/2022).

During the 2022/2023 school year, two students even got to meet Victor Glover, the first person of color selected to go to the moon, in relation to their work on a collapsible lunar table design.

Flo also gave a specific shoutout to student Eliana Underwood, the resident 3D printing expert who helped with designs both last year and this year.

After recognizing the previous years’ accomplishments, Flo then brought up WIHS senior Cassandra Iron Cloud to talk about the main 2023/24 project, which consisted of sewing hygiene kits that will be used to store astronauts’ various toiletry items.

“It was pretty hard,” Cassandra told the crowd, but with a little help, their crew “really got the hang of it” she explained.

County 10 also spoke with senior Kylaya Spoonhunter, who said that NASA provided the patterns for the kits, while students did all of the cutting and sewing.

“It feels cool,” Kylaya said of the accomplishment. “Representing my school, myself and my Tribe.” Kylaya is Northern Arapaho.

Not only do the students get the honor of knowing their work helps NASA, Kylaya and the sewing crew also got to learn first hand the importance of success through failure, or as Kylaya put it, “I became professional at using the seam ripper.”

In addition to the sewing crew, Krassin recognized the work/help from all of the other students involved with the various HUNCH projects.

Following the student recognitions, Sandra and Pat Iron Cloud performed an honor song in celebration of the accomplishments, and then the HUNCH crew had one more surprise for the students.

Every participant in the project got to sign a panel, which will be used and seen on a space craft storage locker like the one pictured in the gallery below.

Staff and family members of the students were also encouraged to sign the panel, which meant Elder Olivia Burton will now also have the honor of getting to see her name go to space.

Those who ended up signing the locker panel included: Neve Bruno, Berril Gold, Mylee Antelope, Shye Killsontop, Ruby Burton, Olivia Burton (Elder), Michaela Hiwalker, Sandra Iron Cloud, Chloe Iron Cloud, Cassandra Iron Cloud, Kylaya Spoonhunter, Dionne Ferris, Faith Headley, Cheryl Headley, Kylee Sankey, Roberta Whiteplume, Eveangeline Sage, Eliana Underwood, Pauline Burton, Alianna Brown, Martin Underwood, Noah Red Willow, Marley C’Hair, Nancy Seiter, Vince Tropea (the organizers insisted the reporters present sign as well!), Marit Gookin, Richi Krassin, and Scott Krassin.

Congratulations to all of the students, staff and family involved in the WIHS NASA HUNCH program, and like Flo said at the beginning of her address, “any of our students here might be on that mission to the moon” someday!

Lander homicide suspect pleads ‘not guilty by reason of mental illness’

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

(Lander, WY) – The arraignment hearing for 39-year-old homicide suspect Michael Ray Vigil was held today, May 9, where he pled “not guilty” and “not guilty by reason of mental illness” to the charge of 2nd degree murder.

The hearing was overseen by the Honorable Judge Jason Conder, with Ember Oakley representing the State, and Ryan Semerad acting as Defense.

Vigil was charged in relation to the April 14 homicide of 57-year-old Warren Jorgenson, where Vigil reportedly beat the victim to death with a metal bar after alleged sexual advances.

After Vigil’s “coupled” plea, the Defense requested a mental examination, however Semerad stated that his overall “fitness to proceed is not an issue at this time.”

Judge Conder approved of the order for the mental exam, and a jury trial was set for September 16.

A murder in the second degree felony charge holds a maximum sentence of life imprisonment (no less than 20 years).

County 10 will provide updates on that hearing, which can be viewed here.

    In loving memory, Gerald Schneider

    0

Gerald Edward Schneider (known as Jerry to family and friends) was born on June 27th 1937 in Spokane Washington at Deaconess Hospital. He went home to be with Jesus on April 19th 2024 in Riverton, Wyoming. He is preceded in death by his parents Otto and Gladys (Kichmaster) Schneider.

Jerry graduated from Berkeley High School in Berkeley California, and was a Typesetter in the Printing Industry, becoming certified in 1961. He was active in the Navy Reserves until his discharge in 1962. When the printing industry began to change with the addition of computers, Jerry became a part of the sales team. As more changes began to happen, Jerry went back to school and worked for himself as a Licensed Home Inspector. Through the years, Jerry also spent a little time as a realtor.
Jerry and Carol (Lugar) were married on July 7th 1956. They lived in California (Albany, Berkeley, and Richmond) where they raised their three children. In 2001 Jerry and Carol made the move to Riverton Wyoming to settle into “retired” life.
Jerry was an avid fisherman (river, lake, or stream) and hunter (Elk, Deer, Antelope, and even a Moose!). He also enjoyed carpentry, finishing the bathroom downstairs in the basement and building a pantry as well. He was very “handy” and could fix just about anything he put his mind to! Jerry liked to read and carried around his “list” of books that he had already read, and the ones he was always on the search for.

Jerry found his “Wyoming” family at Neighborhood Alliance Church in Riverton. He deepened his faith, found fellowship in serving, and was Grandpa to many! He found much joy in being a greeter (always bent down to greet the children), usher, serving communion, and working on numerous building projects. He loved, and loved caring for his church family!
Some words that could be used to describe Jerry are: hardworking, loyal, compassionate, stubborn, emotional, and patriotic. Some things that you might have heard Jerry say are: “see you later” (never good-bye), “who’s having more fun?”, and “you talking to me? (kid)”. Either with tears in his eyes, or with a big smile on his face…

Jerry leaves behind his wife Carol; daughter Janet (and Rick), sons Neil (and Donna) and Jeff (and Jenny); grandchildren Tiffany, Darcy (Mitch), Megan (Cody), and Joel (Lauren); and great-grandchildren Keegan, Gavin, Claira, Sydney, and Owen.
Please join family and friends as we Celebrate Jerry’s life on Saturday June 8th @ 11am at Neighborhood Alliance Church 4440 Riverview Rd. Riverton, Wyoming. Instead of flowers, the family requests donations to Neighborhood Alliance Church www.rivertonalliancechurch.com in Jerry’s honor.

#rivertonbiz, shares the stories of local movers and shakers of our Fremont County economy.

(Riverton, WY) — The new Rise and Shine Airport Café at Central Wyoming Regional Airport offers plate-sized cinnamon rolls, eggs, bacon, sandwiches, and more.

Local resident Teresa Cross, who is the owner of the Rise and Shine Café, has run restaurants for around 40 years and wanted to bring this one back to life.

“I remember when I was younger, it was just such a fun place to come up here with my grandparents and my dad,” Cross said. “It’s just a really good memory up here.”

The restaurant will be open from 4 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week, offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

In addition to the restaurant, patrons can purchase food after passing through security.

“I’ll have burritos and sandwiches and muffins and cinnamon rolls and things like that for them,” Cross noted.

Riverton’s own Java Java is partnering with the café. They plan to have a barista there from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., serving their most popular drinks. They will also have a selection of non-coffee options.

“We’re gonna have fun,” Cross explained. “It’s gonna be a good atmosphere.”

She invites everyone to come up – families, large groups – everyone is welcome.

“If you want a place to go, this is the place to go,” she said.

Their lease agreement was approved by the Riverton City Council earlier in April.

They planned to open in early May. Follow their Facebook page (linked below) for updates on the opening.

Both the Café and Java Java are looking for help to staff their new adventures at the airport. Reach out to them through their respective Facebook pages for more details.
