The LVHS Swim & Dive Team met up against a tough Lyman team on Friday October 16, 2020. The senior members of the team had declared the day’s dress-up theme to be Dress Like a Businesswoman and the athletes wore their serious clothes and brought their serious attitudes to the Bruce Gresly Aquatic Center. Their mission was to qualify more swimmers in more events for the state meet and to hopefully defeat Lyman in the process.
They succeeded on all counts. New qualifiers were Annabelle Nachazel (200 freestyle) and Sophie Shearin (diving). This makes 17 team members qualified for the state meet with two more meets left. In addition, several swimmers earned qualifying times in additional events. The more qualifiers with multiple events, the more flexibility the coaches—Shawna Morgan, Tim Hester, and Faith Hamilton—have in putting together the most competitive lineup at state.
Lander defeated Lyman 112 to 73. Lander took six of the twelve events. Lander’s individual winners were: Lillyan Hamilton (200 yard freestyle), Ashlon Koch (200 yard IM), Divya Forbis (diving), Kristen McPherson (100 yard backstroke), and Lainy Duncan (100 yard breaststroke). Again it was team depth that helped Lander prevail. Other athletes earning points for the Tigers in individual events were: Annabelle Nachazel, Maddie Flint, Kelsey Plaisted, Emily Anderson, Sophie Shearin, Skyler Woodruff, Josey Johnson, Katelyn Brinda, Sharon McMahon, Jessica Baron, Arianna Applegate, and Theresa Bautz.
Coach Shawna Morgan was very excited after the meet. “Friday’s meet against Lyman was my favorite meet of the season. We had fun and we swam and dove amazingly! The girls are competing above and beyond our expectations. We qualified 2 new athletes on Friday and multiple new events…Our training is right where we want it to be so as long as we can stay healthy we are going to be ready for state in 3 weeks.”
This week is what team members call “Peak Week”, where the length and difficulty of practices have been building towards all season. After this Wednesday’s three-hour practice on Peak Night, the team begins to taper with shorter practices. The idea is to build strength and then have extra energy to hopefully achieve maximum performance at the state meet.
The team is next in action Friday, October 23 for the Conference Meet in Lander.
