Two Montana residents, ages 30 and 4, died in Sunday morning wreck on I-80

(Carbon County, WY) – A crash occurring near milepost 215 on I-80 / US-30 near Rawlins was reported at 6:15 AM Sunday morning, which resulted in two deaths, according to a Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP) preliminary report.

The deceased have been identified as 30-year-old and 4-year-old Montana residents Shatone and Jerisiah Hayes.

According to the report, the vehicle was on Interstate 80 when at approximately milepost 215.55, Hayes failed to negotiate the slight right-hand curve in the roadway.

The vehicle then struck a guardrail that was laying on the ground from a previous crash.

The vehicle drove over the guardrail before entering the median, approaching an overpass, continued eastbound between the bridge decks and vaulted off the concrete barrier. \

It cleared both lanes below, striking the concrete wing wall, then flipped over, sliding up underneath the bridge of the westbound lanes of travel.

Driver speed was listed as a possible contributing factor, and the report indicates no seatbelts or child safety seat was in use.

There have been 23 fatalities on Wyoming’s roadways in 2022 compared to 26 in 2021, 20 in 2020, and 41 in 2019 to date.
