(Green River, WY) – Lander’s Girls Swim and Dive Team traveled to Green River last weekend for the 3A West Conference Meet. Lander finished second among the seven teams at the meet.
The team just finished their peak week—the most intense practices of the season—in preparation for tapering for the upcoming State Meet. After such a difficult week of practice, the athletes are tired and sometimes their performance at the conference meet suffers. But not this year. Many of the athletes turned in personal-best or season-best performances.
Two swimmers earned state qualifying times for the first time this season. Senior Emilia Hou-Carleton qualified in the 100 Yard Freestyle event and Freshman Ella Giesmann qualified in the 50 Yard Freestyle and the 100 Yard Freestyle. Hou-Carleton and Giesmann will join at least 13 of their teammates traveling to the State Championship meet in Gillette in two weeks.
This meet had lots of exciting races. Several 3A West Conference Meet records were set, including one by a Lander swimmer. Katy Anderson swam 100 yards of backstroke in 1:01.12 to set the mark. That is also the fastest backstroke time at any meet so far this year for any 3A girls swimmer, according to the WHSAA website.
The Conference Meet consists of one day of preliminary competition where athletes must place in the top twelve in order to advance to the finals competition the next day. Points are only awarded for performances in the finals. Head Coach, Erik DeClue was very pleased, “The girls swam well the first day and the stepped up the second day and swam even better.”
Top-scoring individuals for Lander were: Katy Anderson (1st in the backstroke and 2nd in the butterfly), Emily Anderson (2nd in the IM and 2nd in the breaststroke), Daegan Reinhardt (2nd in the 200 yard freestyle and 3rd in the 500 yard freestyle), Emma Jones (2nd in the backstroke and 4th in the butterfly), Lara Robertson (3rd in the 50 yard freestyle and 3rd in the 100 yard freestyle), Emily Plaisted (4th in the IM and 4th in the breaststroke), Josey Johnson (5th in the 50 yard freestyle and 5th in the 100 yard freestyle), Cira Hampton (8th in the IM and 7th in the backstroke), Chayse Denton (7th in the IM and 11th in the breaststroke), Madi Clancy (7th in diving), Brianna Else (8th in diving), Morgan Hill (9th in 500 yard freestyle), Liv Ooten (10th in 200 yard freestyle), and Ella Giesmann (12th in 50 yard freestyle and 11th in 100 yard freestyle).
Lander’s relay teams took second to Green River in the Medley Relay and the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay. Lander out swam Green River in the final relay of the meet, the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, to claim first in that race.
Lander’s athletes have one more meet to try for qualifying times, Thursday in Riverton at the Last Chance Meet. The team is coached by Head Coach Erik DeClue, Assistant Coach Greg Anderson, and Diving Coach Faith Hamilton.
