Medicare Supplements- Why pay more than you have to?

Medicare Supplement Policies are standardized. So why pay more for the same benefits?

Every Year the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services publishes a guide entitled “Choosing a Medigap Policy: A guide to health insurance for People with Medicare.”

The 2021 guide has the following quote:

“Medigap policies are standardized, and in most states are named by letters, Plans A‑N. Each standardized Medigap policy under the same plan letter must offer the same basic benefits, no matter which insurance company sells it.”

“As a rule of thumb, all Medicare Supplement plan G pay the same as all other Medicare Supplement Plan G. All Medicare Supplement Plan HDG pay the same as all other Medicare Supplement Plan HDG and all Medicare Supplement Plan F pay the same as all other Medicare Supplement Plan F,” says JaDell Hovander, President of Continental Crest Insurance Services, P.C.

JaDell continues, “it is easy to assume that since all the benefits are the same all the premiums must be very similar. They, often, are not. There can be hundreds if not thousands of dollars of difference in annualized premium between policies that pay exactly the same benefits.”
