Meet your friendly, neighborhood pediatric nurses!

Wind River Pediatrics RN, Shirene Petersen was born and raised in Riverton. Shirene graduated from Riverton High School and received a full-ride scholarship to CWC where she graduated from the Nursing Program in 2004.

Shirene has always loved science and learning new skills. She wanted to be able to help take care of family and friends.

    Why Pediatric Nursing?
From an early age, I have always loved kids. During our nursing clinical rotations, I always wanted to be in the hospital setting to sharpen my skills and become comfortable with my new knowledge. I worked in Labor and Delivery for 12 years at the Riverton Campus. I loved every aspect of the mother and child and transition to home care.

While working beside Dr. Fisher in Labor and Delivery, I always admired his knowledge and appreciated his dedication to his patients. Dr. Fisher had a position available and I knew he would be wonderful to work with. I have been here ever since. This is my seventh year as a pediatric nurse. It has been rewarding to see families that I had the privilege to be in on their deliveries to now seeing them in the office. Some of the same babies I gave care to in the hospital have now graduated from High school.

What do you love about your job?
I love being able to see families come into our office and watch them grow and add new additions. I have made great friends through the office and am honored to get to know our families.

I love the fact that Dr. Fisher gives out his cell phone to all his patients for those after-hour or weekend questions. Very reassuring as a patient. He treats us like his own family. I like to feel that we as a team are all very approachable for questions or advice and that we are very flexible and get them in to be seen on the same day.

    Fun Fact about me.
My husband and I both have our scuba diving certifications and love to go diving. When our girls are old enough we hope they will want to go exploring and diving with us.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?
When I’m not at work, we love to go camping and swimming as a family. We have 16 horses/mules we take to the mountains on pack trips. We go hunting and in general exploring Wyoming. We are also very busy with our family farm irrigating and producing alfalfa.

Shirene is married to her college sweetheart. They have been together 20 years and married for the last nine years in June. Shirene and her husband have two girls that keep them busy. One attends Shoshoni School and the other is eight months old now.

“I am celebrating 19 years as part of the Sage West Hospital this year. I love that this is my hometown and that I can give back to our awesome community.”

Wind River Pediatrics RN, Britnea Hawker graduated from Riverton High School in 2008 and Central Wyoming College Nursing Program in 2011.

From a young age, Britnea knew she wanted to work in the medical field, and follow in her mom’s footsteps. As she grew older, she settled on the nursing program at CWC because it was close to home.

    Why Pediatric Nursing?
I have always loved being around children and babies. It was always my dream to work in the OB field – which I did for 2 years prior to moving over to the pediatric office. I love the interaction with babies and children. I love their curiosity, honesty, innocence, and fun spirit.

What do you wish you could tell every parent and why?
We are mothers too and have been there. We are here and happy to help with any questions. We have probably wondered the same thing or asked the same questions. You are not alone and can call at any time.

    Fun fact about you.
I grew up out in the country – in the house next to the one that my dad grew up in. I like to sew clothes for my girls.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?
When not at work, I enjoy being with my family. I have a large amount of family in Riverton. We enjoy being in the mountains- going fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, riding side-by-sides, and just spending time outdoors.

What was your best day at work?
Most all days are good days here at our office. The best ones involve meeting new families and their newborn babies.

Britnea lives in Riverton with her husband and their two girls and a baby boy on the way (due in August). She has been a nurse for 10 years.
