    Governor Gordon appoints UW grad Justin Chavez as Department of Audit interim director

    (Cheyenne, WY) – Governor Mark Gordon has announced the appointment of Justin Chavez as the interim director of the Wyoming Department of Audit.

    Chavez has worked in the Department of Audit since 2002, most recently serving as Public Funds Administrator. In that role he was responsible for the strategic direction of the division, including management of the division budget and management of the statewide audit contract.

    His previous roles in the department include School Finance Audit Manager, Supervising Auditor and Principal Auditor. Chavez is a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Information Systems Auditor.

    He earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Wyoming.

    Chavez replaces Fred Rife who has served as interim director for the past year and who will return to his position as Administrator of the Department’s Administrative Division.

    The Governor thanked Rife for his work in shepherding the Department through the challenges of the past 12 months.

    The Department of Audit is responsible for the regulation of financial institutions, including auditing public agencies and local governments. It is also responsible for conducting audits for the collection of federal and state mineral royalties, state mineral and excise taxes, and for coordinating auditing and other revenue matters.

    Chavez’s appointment is effective immediately.
