CWC splits contests at Eastern Wyoming College Saturday

Central basketball teams got a split at Eastern Wyoming College on Saturday.   The men’s team earned a season sweep over the Lancers in a come from behind win.  The win also halted a three game losing skid for the Rustlers. The women would split their two conference games with EWC with each team winning on their home court.

The Rustler women were outscored in all four quarters.  They found themselves down 46 to 31 at half. “Turnovers, again, were our demise.” said coach Lindsey Fearing.  The Rustlers turned the ball over 29 times to EWC. Five Lancers scored in double figures. They would make 10 three’s and 14 free throws in the win.

Freshman Essy Latu played the entire game for CWC and led the Rustlers scoring 17 points.  Rylee Burmester scored 16 and pulled down 9 rebounds. Tamia Cutignola dished out five assists.

The Rustler men trailed for almost the entire game by nearly double digits.   The Rustler defense got stops and then converted on the other end to tie the game at 80.  Darius Guinn hit a three to give CWC their first lead in the game with :57 seconds to play.   From there, they got stops and hit shots and free throws to seal the win. CWC connected on a season-high 22 three-pointers in the game, going 22 for 38.

Coach Brad Schmit, “The second half was the difference.  The guys bought into each other and held them to 12 points in the last 11 minutes of the game.   It wasn’t anything I said, it was just them believing in each other.”

Connor Nelson scored 22 to lead the way hitting 6 threes. Darius Guinn scored 18 with a trio of three’s and 9 of 10 free throws.  He also had 7 assists. James Woods hit five three-pointers and scored 15. Jacob Smith hit 4 three’s and had 13 points.
