After going 7-5 this season, Wyoming football concluded the year with a New Year’s Eve victory in the Arizona Bowl, beating Georgia State 38-17.
Tucson’s economy also won.
According to University of Wyoming Athletics Director Tom Burman, somewhere between 10,000-15,000 Wyoming fans made the pilgrimage for football and warmer weather. That’s hotels, meals, gasoline, shopping, and…. refreshments, lots and lots of refreshments.
Wyoming fans specifically, in fact, have built a bit of a reputation for enjoying a couple of pops. In 2004, the Las Vegas Bowl SOLD OUT of beer… completely, the entire stadium. The bowl attributes the sell out to Cowboy fans.
The Arizona Bowl and Tucson brewery, Barrio Brewing, collaborated on a special Arizona Bowl beer in anticipation of the thirsty Pokes fans this year.
The 2019 game was only the 5th time the Arizona Bowl has been played. It was the second-highest attended out of the five, but it was the highest “beer-selling” game, ever… by far… like, not even close.
The Powell Tribune reports that the event sold over $100,000 more in beer than any other Arizona Bowl, or 14,285 more individual brewskis, than any other year.
