Trail work improves non-motorized use west of Lander

(Lander, WY) – After a month-long project, non-motorized recreational users will notice many improvements at the Willow Creek area on the Washakie Ranger District of the Shoshone National Forest. As another project funded by the Great American Outdoors Act, a Wyoming Conservation Corps trail crew worked alongside Forest Service personnel to complete this extensive project.

While the focus of this project was to improve conditions for winter ski and recreational use of the area, benefits will be seen year-round. A few of the noticeable improvements include better access to Willow Creek Ski Trails to allow for grooming operations to begin earlier in the season; the enhanced surface tread of trails along with increased corridor widths and sightlines; and additional signage for easier navigation on the trail system. All of this work was done in collaboration with the Lander Cycling Club and the Rock Shop Inn.

“The overall goal of this project was to provide better access for those who enjoy winter recreational opportunities in the Willow Creek area of the Washakie Ranger District,” said Washakie District Ranger Steve Schacht. “This successful trail enhancement project, which was completed through the Great American Outdoors Act, provided us with needed funds to rent heavy equipment allowing our staff to complete this project within a much shorter timeframe.”
