    #Smiles: CAP Cadet receives AFA Outstanding Cadet Award

    A series to share #smiles across our community through the achievements of our local youth, brought to you by Olsen Orthodontics.

    (Lander, WY) – On January 28th, the Wind River Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol was pleased to award C/SMSgt Nicholas Stong with the Air Force Association’s CAP Outstanding Squadron Cadet of the Year Award for 2020.

    The mission of the AFA “…is to promote dominant U.S. Air and Space Forces as the foundation of a strong National Defense; to honor and support our Airmen, Space Force Professionals, and their Families; and to remember and respect our enduring Heritage.

    To accomplish this, they:

    • “EDUCATE the public on the critical need for unrivaled aerospace power and a technically superior workforce to ensure national security.
    • ADVOCATE for aerospace power, and promote aerospace and STEM education and professional development.
    • SUPPORT readiness for the Total Air and Space Forces, including Active Duty, National Guard, Reserve, civilians, families and members of the Civil Air Patrol”

    This award consists of a medal and ribbon and is presented annually at each unit to the outstanding third-year cadet. The award recipient must possess/meet the following personal characteristics and eligibility criteria:

    • Positive attitude.
    • Outstanding personal appearance (uniform and grooming).
    • Display personal attributes such as initiative, judgment, and self-confidence. Courteous demeanor (promptness, obedience, and respect for customs).

    Cadet Stong was selected from several deserving candidates because of his outstanding passion for aerospace education, especially model rocketry. In 2020 he became one of the first cadets in the squadron to complete the advanced model rocketry program and is also the first squadron cadet to receive the AFA award.
