Riverton Mayor John “Lars” Baker signed a proclamation Tuesday at the Riverton City Council meeting encouraging community residents to shop locally this holiday season, and participate in “Small Business Saturday.”
Earlier this month, Lander Mayor Del McOmie also signed a proclamation encouraging participation in Small Business Saturday.
Every year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, holiday shoppers are encouraged to support locally owned “mom and pop” style businesses. The creation of the event came in 2010 and was in response to what’s become the largest shopping day of the year at large retail chains, “Black Friday.”
In 2017, an estimated 43% of American adults shopped or dined at a local business to directly support Small Business Saturday.
McOmie said that while Small Business Saturday participation is great, he hopes that residents remember to support community businesses year-round.
Baker joked briefly after signing the proclamation about what day Small Business “Saturday” was on.
