Local bull rider to compete in high school nationals next month

(Riverton, WY) – Recent Riverton High School graduate and bull rider Brodie Bates finished 3rd overall at the Wyoming High School State Rodeo in Gillette last weekend.

This achievement moves him to the 2021 National High School Finals Rodeo which is held in Lincoln, Nebraska on July 18th-24th. He is the only Fremont County qualifier for the NHSFR this year.

Overall, 54 contestants from across the Cowboy State will head to the competition, according to the Wyoming High School Rodeo Association nationals qualifier results. Other high school bull riders joining Brodie at nationals include Brody Hasenack of Jackson, Kacy Jones of Newcastle and Colton Coffman of Lusk. Read the complete list of qualifiers here.

The NHSFR website says it is the world’s largest rodeo, and features more than 1,650 contestants from 44 states, five Canadian Provinces, Australia, Mexico and New Zealand.

In addition to competing for more than $150,000 in prizes and over $200,000 in cash, NHSFR contestants will also be competing for more than $375,000 in college scholarships and the chance to be named an NHSFR World Champion.

To earn this title, contestants must finish in the top 20 – based on their combined times/scores in the first two rounds – to advance to Saturday evening’s final round. World champions will then be determined based on their three-round combined times/scores.
