Fremont County residents gather in Riverton to show support for their Hawaiian friends and family

Fremont County residents from Hawaii met in front of Riverton City Hall at noon today for a peaceful gathering to show support for their family and friends protesting the Thirty Meter Telescope. One participant noted it wasn’t possible to drop everything and fly to Hawaii. Instead, they decided to gather today in hopes of bringing awareness to this issue and show their solidarity.

What is the Thirty Meter Telescope?

Mauna Kea is Hawaii’s highest point and the summit is considered sacred in Hawaiian culture. This site has been selected for a scientific project, Thirty Meter Telescope. Demonstrations have been happening at the base of the mountain and across the country for about a week in an effort to stop the construction. More information can be found here.
