Update: One fatality confirmed in Wednesday afternoon crash just outside of Riverton

1:00 p.m. update: Fremont County Coroner Mark Stratmoen has confirmed to County 10 that there was one fatality in the accident Wednesday. No additional information is available at this time, we’ll update as we learn more.

Wednesday afternoon at 3:07 p.m. local authorities responded to a 2-vehicle accident on Highway 789 near mile post 101, or just about one mile south of the Wind River Casino.

A gold four-door car and a red Dodge Durango SUV were involved. One local authority told County 10 it appeared the car rear-ended the Durango, but that has not been confirmed. The Fremont County Sheriff’s call log indicated that one of the vehicles rolled.

It appeared both vehicles were traveling southbound, from Riverton toward Hudson.

Fremont County Sheriffs, the Riverton Fire Department, Guardian EMS, Riverton Police Department, and Wind River Police Department all responded to the incident. It was ultimately handled by the Wind River Police Department.

There were reports via scanner traffic of injuries that required those involved to be transported to Riverton and Lander hospitals. Scanner traffic also indicated that at least one patient received CPR.

The accident caused one lane of traffic to close for roughly 45 minutes Wednesday. Authorities directed traffic through the open lane, causing 10-15 minute delays for motorists.
