Schools participating in Life R U Ready Event

Talk with your children about the dangers that can lead to serious injury and loss of life.

“There are numerous local businesses and over 100 volunteers dedicating their time to help prevent serious injury and loss of life. We are all only looking for one thing in return: Talk with your kids about the topics covered at the Life R U Ready Event. Our goal is for caregivers to use the event as a means of approaching subjects that are not always easy to talk about.”
~ Noel Cooper, Injury Prevention Resources

Fort Washakie, Riverton, Arapahoe, Wind River, and Dubois School Districts know the importance of continued education surrounding seat belts, texting, drugs, alcohol, suicide, and bullying. These schools will be participating in The Life R U Ready Program Tuesday and Wednesday April 23rd & 24th, 2019. The event will be held at the Fremont County Fairgrounds in Riverton.

The event is offered to all schools in Fremont County with a 6th grade student body. Participation is decided by the school.

The “Life R U Ready?” Project is a “life-simulation” health fair for Fremont County 6th grade students that is designed to increase awareness of the consequences of behavior, to decrease motivation to participate in risk taking behavior, and to provide new opportunities for parent-teen communication. Students will find themselves in a scripted party scene where they approach a variety of unhealthy and risky behaviors. These behaviors will result in scripted consequences that lead students on to experience outcomes such as a rollover crash demonstration, jail, emergency room care and a juvenile courtroom. Professional counselors, including community and school counselors, are continually observing students participating and are always available if a student should feel overwhelmed by the simulated activities. After experiencing the first portion of the event, students are involved in suicide prevention, an understanding of disabilities, bullying education, life flight, ambulance, and fire department demonstrations.

“We cover the most likely causes of death and serious injury at this event.” Noel Cooper from Injury Prevention Resources stated. “We wish every school in the county was participating, but it is always up to the school if they chose to utilize this opportunity.”

The goals of the project are to prepare youth to make informed decisions about life choices and to provide parents and trusted adults with current information about life choice behaviors from a youth’s perspective. The event works to encourage open, honest teen-parent discussion of these behaviors and the consequences.
