Bear attacks 10-year-old boy in Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park officials reported a bear attack Thursday morning.

A news release from the park says a family of four from Washington were hiking along the Divide Trail, southeast of Old Faithful, where the bear approached them.

The animal knocked the 10-year-old to the ground in the attack. Members of his family had bear spray and deployed it about five feet from the bear. The release said the bear then shook his head and left the area.

The boy sustained puncture wounds to his back and injured his wrist. A spokesperson said beyond that, it’s unclear how serious the injuries are at this point. Wildlife and law enforcement officials say they are investigating the attack.

It is still not clear what type of bear was responsible for the attack.
