Riverton resident and advocate for the homeless Shadell Mullen is independently rallying the community to create a “warming station” in Riverton as soon as possible. Temperatures continue to drop, and there is no place for those less fortunate to turn. The station would serve as a place for the homeless to go and stay overnight.
“This is a community issue. We can’t wait for grants or proposals. We need to rally together to make this happen for the less fortunate population,” Shadell explained. Everything needs to be donation-based, and the most immediate need is a heated building with two separate areas for men and women. No showers or food for this initial step, just a warm place for them to spend the night.
“The LORD put it in my heart to do this,” Shadell said. This is the beginning of creating a more substantial shelter and resource for the homeless. Her mission statement: “Opening our hearts up to the homeless in the name of love. Love for mankind, humanity, and community. Bridging the chasm created by oppression.”
Volunteers and donations of blankets and pillows are appreciated right now as well.
