Sue Ann (Pilcher) Cloninger, 70, lost a battle with cancer on Wednesday September 18, 2019 at the age of 70.

Sue was born in Sedalia, Missouri on April 23, 1949 to Melvie (Ream) and Byron Pilcher. She was their only child. Sue graduated from Smith-Cotton High School in Sedalia, Missouri, in 1966. She was married to Gary Wayne Cloninger on August 31, 1968, and divorced in 1981.

Sue graduated from Central Missouri State College in 1971 with a degree in Education. After graduation she taught elementary school for 2 years in Sedalia, and then moved to Canton, IL with Gary and their son, Paul. From Canton they moved to Beatrice where they opened and ran a home improvement store named Gary’s Home Center from 1979-1981. She soon began her first job in a lifelong career helping people with mental disabilities at the Beatrice State Developmental Center. She moved with her two sons, Paul and Matthew, to Boulder MT to work for the Montana State Training School in 1986, before transferring to Lander, Wyoming, in 1990. She celebrated a 25 year service award at the Wyoming Life Resource Center in 2015. After retiring from the State she worked for Legal Aide of Wyoming where she could continue to help others.

Sue was an avid knitter and quilter and enjoyed making gifts for both friends and family. She had started knitting sweaters and hats for stuffed bears. Later on, she would spend much time knitting socks and hats and would make hats for newborns as well as cancer patients in Bozeman. An evening at Sue’s house often included a game of cribbage or dominoes. She opened her home to many foreign exchange students of Lander Valley High School.

Sue is survived by her two sons, Paul Wayne and wife Gretchen of Bothell WA, and Matthew Alan and wife Michelle of Bozeman MT, and four grandchildren Meghan, Natthan, Silas, and Mirabel.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Sunday, October 20, 2019 at the Lander Community & Convention Center, 950 Buena Vista Drive, Lander, WY.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to The Cancer Support Community of Montana, 102 S. 11th Ave, Bozeman, MT 59715 or online at https://cancersupportmontana.org/support-us/donate/donate-now/
