Eric grew up in Fremont County. He graduated RHS in ’97, then took a few years to find himself. He dropped out of CWC – twice – and moved to Denver for a while.
“I was just lost,” Eric says. “My dad finally called me and said, ‘you’re moving home and selling insurance.'”
Eric thought he was “too cool” for a professional job like insurance sales, but his dad Tom, a local business owner himself, informed Eric that “living at home isn’t cool either.”
Long-time Farmer’s Agent Bill Rouse gave Eric a chance and on June 5, 2000, Eric Smartt started his insurance career.
That’s when things clicked. No one knew it at the time, but Smartt Insurance Agency was born that day. Working as a Farmer’s Agent for 5 years, Eric began his own independent agency in the fall of 2005 and moved into the Hursch Building in downtown Riverton.
“I knew just enough to be dangerous, but I knew this is what I wanted to do. So I presented a business plan to my dad and hung up a shingle.”
In 2011, just 6 years after striking out, he bought the building where his office was located and hasn’t slowed down since.
Today, Smartt Insurance has locations in Riverton, Rock Springs and opened an office in Lander just this last July of 2018 – and has no plans to stop there.
“We feel like we offer something special,” Eric says. “We’re independent with a huge array of products and more than 10 top national insurance brands to choose from.”
Being independent means Smartt Insurance can find the right policy for everyone in any situation. “Whether it’s a 30 day cash and carry policy or we’re shopping to insure your house, multiple vehicles and a toy or two, we’re extremely competitive and really good at finding just the right fit for our customers.”
Eric has focused on building an agency that can serve any customer. To that end, he’s invested in staff that specialize in various insurance lines so they can save customers money and match the right plans with customers’ needs.
He recently recruited an expert in farm and ranch and they also handle Medicare supplemental plans for seniors.
“We’re the easy button,” Eric says. “‘Insurance made simple’ is how we think of ourselves.”
