#10Life: Growing up in Jeffrey City

#10life is County 10 series to share and celebrate everything that’s great about local life in Fremont County, brought to you by RE/MAX All-Star, Realtors.

Jeffrey City is well known for being a uranium boomtown with a population fluctuating to well over 4,000 at its peak and now 58 from the most recent census in 2010.

We connected with Holly Caproni who grew up in Jeffrey City during the uranium boom. Holly shared a few lesser-known things about Jeffrey City; like most students went to Lander for school before the Jeffrey City High School was built. During the school week, they stayed with host families in Lander. A bus would take students to Lander on Sunday evenings and bring them home on Friday nights.

Holly also notes, Jeffrey City was famous for jade and people had jade claims. A fun family event was to go rock hunting.

Other popular things to do were attend the The Lions Club sponsored Friday night movies or join a bowling league. They had both adult and teen bowling leagues. The recreation center had an outside pool. Holly said, “It was a great place to grow up, we were all a big family.”
