In loving memory, John William Karhu

John William Karhu Jr passed away peacefully at his home in Basin on June 9, 2024.  He was born November 27, 1943 to John and Betty Karhu in Cody, WY.  He attended Cody schools where he took part in two of his favorite sports, football and wrestling.  John attended the University of Wyoming for Civil Engineering and then capped off his education with a Master’s in Construction Management from Stanford University.  John met his wife, Carolyn Roberts, at UW and they were married August 6, 1967.  They have three children, Kari Lynn, Rory and Karna.  John loved his family and worked hard to provide for them.  He worked for WYDOT for 40 years where he was recognized as a dedicated and respected Engineer.  He supported his kids and grandkids in all their activities ranging from a variety of 4-H projects to multiple sports.  He loved the outdoors, particularly fishing, hunting, and backcountry pack trips on horseback.  He loved animals, particularly horses and dogs.  He loved gardening and later farming in his retirement years.  John had an incredible work ethic and ingenious mind as evidenced by his perseverance in utilizing tools and resources to continue working on his property, despite the progressive nature of ALS.    John, Papa, Dad will be missed terribly by his family, particularly his quick wit and gentle encouragement.  John was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Robert Karhu and infant grandson, Sebastian White.  He is survived by his wife Carolyn of 56 years.  His children Kari Lynn White (Wade) of Lander, Rory Karhu (Veronica) of Powell and Karna Johnson (Kevin) of Bozeman, MT.  Seven grandchildren: Eliana Karhu Twomey (Dominic), Brody Karhu (Macey), Emma Karhu, L’anza and Creighton White and Daniel and Mikaela Johnson and one great grandchild, Nolan Twomey.  In memory of John, thank an Engineer and spend time with your loved ones enjoying the outdoors.  In honor of John’s wishes, a private family memorial will be held at a later date.
