Help local Lander mule deer by volunteering for bitterbrush seed collection on July 24

(Lander, WY) –  For Lander’s Southern Wind River Mule Deer Herd, antelope bitterbrush is one of their favorite groceries. That’s why the Wyoming Wildlife Federation has teamed up with the Bureau of Land Management and 10 Country Chapter of Muley Fanatic Foundation to invite you to collect bitterbrush seeds on July 24, 2024, at 5:00 pm.

The severe drought conditions between 2020 and 2022, along with major pest outbreaks left much of the Lander Front’s bitterbrush in rough shape and future habitat improvement projects in critical mule deer habitat near Lander can help deer populations grow.

Step one in this process is collecting bitterbrush seeds from local bitterbrush plants during the summer of 2024. This project will need all hands on deck, since the window to collect bitterbrush seeds from plants is narrow. Volunteers will meet along locations in Red Canyon between 14 and 21 miles south of Lander on Highway 28 to collect seeds from the thriving bitterbrush plants there.

After the work is done, WWF, with support from the LOR Foundation, will provide a FREE post-project dinner and beverages to thank volunteers for attending after work in the middle of the week.

RSVP for this event at wyomingwildlife.org/buck-brush-seed-collection-day-2024 to help organizers plan for work supplies, food for the event, and keep you up to date on the specific project site the week of the event.

Thanks to our partners at the Lander Bureau of Land Management for bringing this project to Wyoming Wildlife Federation, as well as the support from 10 Country Chapter of Muley Fanatic Foundation for making the project possible.
