Christie Wildcat not only graduates from Central Wyoming College (CWC) in December 2019 and graduates from the University of Wyoming (UW) with a triple major in May 2020, she will compete for the next Miss Indian World title in April 2020.
“It is all exciting. It feels so surreal,” Christie shared when asked about all of her upcoming paramount events. “I want to represent my tribe, my family, and where I’m from.”
It didn’t take long after Christie applied for the Miss Indian World Pageant to get the phone call saying she was accepted to compete. The pageant takes place in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on April 23rd – 25th at the 37th Annual Gathering of Nations Pow Wow.
Running for the title has been part of Christie’s plan since seeing the 2013 Miss Indian World in Washington, D.C. “That’s Miss Indian World, the highest title you can get for an indigenous woman,” Christie recalls her mom saying after she asked her who was wearing the beautiful beaded crown. After that, she knew once she was old enough and felt fully prepared, she would run for the title.
To say Christie is involved in her local communities is an understatement. Her list of academic groups, achievements, community service organizations, committees, and so on, is very long. A few of the highlight groups noted include the Wind River All Action Crew, Special Olympics Riverton, UW Keepers of the Fire, and Center for Native American Youth. Among the many other things, she organized Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) events and wrote the MMIGW proclamation signed by Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon this past Spring.
With everything she has accomplished, including education in traditional Arapaho ways and language, she felt ready and confident in herself to run for the 2020 title.
The Miss Indian World Pageant has four main competition categories, including Traditional Talent Presentation representing your Tribe(s), Public Speaking, Private Interviews, and a Dance Competition. Christie was excited to share archery is her planned Traditional Talent Presentation. “Arapaho’s are well known for hunting, and I thought this was a unique way to represent the tribe on stage.”
A portion of the competition includes selling raffle tickets. Christie has set a goal to sell at least 500 raffle tickets as part of her commitment to the pageant. Raffle ticket sales pay for the pageant fee, offset funds needed to travel to Albuquerque, and in the event of a tie, the competitor with the most raffle tickets sold will win. Raffle tickets are reasonably priced at $2.50 each or four for $10.00 and you don’t have to be present to win.
