#WyoStrong: Fremont County woman successfully opens Fort Washakie’s only floral shop

#WyoStrong stories, brought to you by Wyoming Community Bank, highlight Wyoming perseverance, ingenuity, creativity and resilience.

Alberta John has spent over 1,000 hours perfecting the art of floral arrangement, and recently completely something that, at least in recent memory, has not been done. A floral shop is open for business in Fort Washakie.

John told us she’s been working on opening Birdy’s Floral in Fort Washakie physically since April but has had the idea for a while. “I had been thinking about a floral shop in Fort Washakie for a long time. I used to do floral arrangements at Mr. D’s in Lander, and thought, ‘I could deliver them out here.”

There appears to be only one other floral shop in the county that will deliver to Fort Washakie.

John is a Fremont County native, growing up in Crowheart. She attended a floral arrangement school in Denver, then returned home to turn her passion into a career.

Birdy’s Floral held a ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony September 18th. “Since then, we’ve stayed extremely busy,” said John. She noted that the Homecoming season was extremely busy for her while working with local schools, but also said that she’s stayed busy with birthday’s, anniversaries, and various other events.

John told us that she’s “seeing a few more business opportunities reaching Fort Washakie” and explained that she hopes her example encourages others to start a business of their own.

While flowers are the big seller at Birdy’s, you’ll also find gift bags, stuffed animals, chocolates, and starting very soon Hallmark cards.
