Saturday night in Casper, WSI honored Lander swim coach Jennifer Schaff as the 2016-2017 WSI Coach of the Year at their Top 5 banquet.
“I started coaching ‘learn-to-swim’ for Bruce Gresly when I was in high school, and started again coaching the club swimmers with Bruce in 2005”, shared Schaff.
We asked what moments have stood out for her this year: “One of the most memorable moments was the first time (in almost 20 years) our 13-14 boys broke 2 state relay records. It wasn’t even on our radar, and their relay times qualified them for age group regionals. The 2016-2017 season has been monumental.”
Twelve Lander swimmers received Top 5 honors in Wyoming, 2 individual record-breakers (40 for Jonny Kulow, 1 for Caleb Huelskamp). Schaff coached the Wyoming Age Group Zone Team. Kulow set 3 Western Zone records and received 12 National Top 16 awards. Schaff added, “He [Kulow] got a standing ovation at the banquet. I was trying not to cry. More than anything, this honor I would not have achieved without the distinct privilege of coaching MANY wonderful athletes from both Lander and around Wyoming, or without the enormously talented and dedicated club coaching and administrative staff, and of course, the enormous support of our parents.”
When not swim coaching Schaff is an Instructor at the Wyoming Life Resource Center. She confided that she does have a goal on the horizon that she’d like to attain: “I have a Vision Board on my vanity and it says ‘Olympics’ on it. I would really like to go to the Olympics as a spectator, but my dream is to be there for a competing Lander swimmer.
