The National Alliance for Caregiving (NAC) and AARP recently released their joint research study report regarding caregiving in the United States. This study is conducted roughly every five years to look at the trends of caregiving and its effects of caregiving in our nation.
The 2020 updated report, “Caregiving in the U.S “indicates a steady increase in caregiving throughout our country. Now roughly 1 in 5 Americans are providing unpaid care to an adult with health or functional needs. Nearly 26% of these individuals are providing care to someone with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia and 24% of caregivers are providing care to more than one person.
Although rewarding, Caregiving can have some overall effects on the health and wellbeing of those providing care to others. This study showed an increase of those caregivers reporting that their own health as fair to poor (21%) and that caregiving had at least one (1) financial impact on their lives (45%). These facts, encompassed by an aging population and more than half (61%) of the caregivers still working, caregiving can cause a toll on those providing the care.
This report strongly indicates a need for communities to wrap around the caregivers living among us.
One of the ways Wyoming Senior Citizens, Inc. is doing this, is by offering the National Family Caregiver Support Program (NFCSP).
The National Family Caregiver Support Program currently offers Respite, Homemaking, Assistance with Coordination of Services, and Support Group to non-paid family caregivers providing aid to someone over the age of 60 or living with a neurological disorder such as dementia.
Caregivers do not need to be living with their loved ones to receive assistance, these services can assist individuals who are caring for their household and that of an elder family member or friend whom they are assisting maintain independence.
