For the first time ever, the Wyoming Indian boys and girls basketball teams are state champions in the same year.
It took some drama Saturday to decide both state championship games, but WIHS prevailed twice.
In first state championship game from the Casper Events Center, the Lady Chiefs knocked off Southeast’s Lady Cyclones thanks to a long buzzer beater from senior Alex Trosper. WIHS’ defense created a 10-second violation to get the possession with 1.4 seconds left in regulation. After inbounding the ball, Trosper launched a long three-pointer for a 49-46 win.
In the final of 4 state championship games Saturday, the Wyoming Indian boys survived two overtimes with the Pine Bluffs Hornets. The Chiefs picked up a win 69-67 after 8 additional minutes of playing time.
The Wyoming Indian boys also defeated Big Horn and Wright in the state tournament to advance to Saturday’s championship game.
The Lady Chiefs took down Big Horn Thursday and Pine Bluffs Friday to advance to the title game.
Fremont County was also represented at state by the St. Stephens and Shoshoni girls. St. Stephens took third place after defeating Hanna-Elk Mountain Thursday, losing to Arvada-Clearmont Friday, and bouncing back to beat Farson-Eden Saturday 51-42.
The Shoshoni ladies lost to Southeast and Greybull Thursday and Friday.
