ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.

  • Lead their team to ensure adequate services are provided to ensure the safest conditions for the traveling public.
  • Oversees and performs all maintenance tasks.
  • Observes, verifies and documents work activities of the team.
  • Plan, assign, and supervise work of the team on a daily basis.
  • Communicates project information and proposed courses of action and/or subsequent consequences.
  • Completes performance evaluations for their team members.
  • Ability to make and record daily weather observations.
  • Complete budgeting, resource management, and scheduling for the department.
  • Operate single and tandem axle trucks, equipped with auger, aerial lift equipment, or equipped with plows, wing plow, sander and chemical systems to remove snow and ice from roadway surface.
  • Responsible for rehabilitation of roadway surfaces and traffic control devices.
  • Attends and completes all required training in order to obtain or maintain required certifications, perform inspections, and learn new skills.
  • Utilizes special computerized equipment.
  • Operate front end loaders, plow trucks, rotary plows and other heavy equipment to assist in snow removal.
  • Provides leadership, coordinates all maintenance activities and gives direction to subordinates performing snow removal operations.
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently operate computer systems and programs.
  • Responsible for assisting to prepare long range and yearly work plan for assigned road sections.



Preference may be given to applicants with WYDOT Maintenance experience and/or Management experience.


  • Knowledge of purchasing procedures.
  • Knowledge of long range planning.
  • Knowledge of as-constructed plans.
  • Knowledge of monetary limitations and proper procedures to initiate payments.
  • Knowledge of specifications, standard plans, policies and procedures, rules, regulations and traffic control standards.
  • Ability to meet weekly deadlines for reports/paperwork, ensuring accuracy.
  • Knowledge of computer systems and work reporting procedures and requirements and maintenance management practices specific to WYDOT.
  • Knowledge of Federal and State requirements for proper use of personal protective equipment and safety standards.
  • Knowledge of Safe Work Procedures, First Aid, CPR, Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used in completing tasks.
  • Knowledge of Hazardous Materials Response Procedures.
  • Knowledge of highway equipment and operations.


Bachelor’s Degree (typically in Engineering)

0-1 year of progressive work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Highway Maintenance Specialist I

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License


Education & Experience Substitution:
3-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Highway Maintenance Specialist I

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License

Necessary Special Requirements


  • Individuals in this classification must be available for emergency work calls anytime, including nights, weekends and holidays. Acceptance of an appointment to this classification signifies that the individual is aware of this requirement and will comply with it. Failure to be available for emergency work, without an acceptable excuse, will be grounds for immediate disciplinary action and possible dismissal.
  • Individuals must report to the department shop within 30 minutes of receiving a call.
  • Frequent use of manual and powered hand tools.
  • Daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Frequent exposure to hazardous materials.
  • Ability to sit/stand and operate equipment for long periods of time.
  • Ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds independently.
  • Work outdoors for extended periods of time in adverse environmental conditions.


  • FLSA: Non-Exempt – All new hires or rehires starting in a non-exempt position on or after January 1, 2018 are required to be paid hourly.
