Wind River Service Week is currently underway

(Pavillion, WY) – It’s been a tradition at Wind River for the last 12 years to celebrate Service Week during the early part of February.

This year the school has identified Wind River Learning Academy teacher Mara Mills for their fundraising efforts.

Mills is battling cancer and the funds raised will help her in traveling and lodging expenses while she receives treatment at an oncology center in Denver.

“Our goal is to raise $10,000,” Wind River high school secretary Stacey Wempen said.

Throughout the week various fundraising activities have taken place to help meet the goal.

Monday for $10 students were allowed to wear their hats inside the building for the week, it raised $180.

On Wednesday and Thursday, the staff played Elmo songs over the school intercom and only shut it off when the students raised $75 the first day, with a target of $100 on Thursday.

A bake sale at the boys and girls basketball game with Big Piney on Tuesday raised $600.

Though it was not part of the Service Week fundraising effort, basketball officials Brian Tucker, Brandon Kidgell, and Larry Woodington wore orange lanyards and orange whistles in honor of Wind River Elementary student Nixon David who passed away last year in an automobile accident. Orange was Nixon’s favorite color.
