(Pavillion, WY) – Fremont County School District #6 Board of Trustees held a special board meeting Tuesday evening, where they voted on a new calendar for the next two academic school years.
This was the second calendar voted on and passed by the Board. The first calendar, passed in March, was rescinded during the meeting after concerns were raised by parents and some community members about the process and impacts of that calendar.
The new calendar changes for the upcoming school year, as compared to the current calendar, include a later start date – Aug. 23rd instead of Aug. 16th – and a later end date – June 7th instead of May 26th. School days are shorter under the new calendars, too, ending at 3:16 pm instead of 3:50 pm.
Two calendar options were presented, and ultimately a motion was made for option “B” by Trustee Angela McCann.
“I believe this is a good negotiation between what I heard from the educators, and what I have heard from the public,” she said.
All of the Trustees voted in favor of option B with the exception of Richard Denke who voted nay.
The issue of having a shorter day and no after-school programming is still a concern, especially for parents who work in Riverton or Lander.
One parent mentioned Tuesday evening the possibility of having an activities bus transport students to the Boys & Girls Club in Riverton.
Chairwoman Dawn Leonhardt thanked her for looking into that as an option and said they are “actively working on something that we could have for the kiddos for after school.”
