Lander girls now 1-1 in Douglas Classic following loss to Wheatland

    (Douglas, WY) – In one of those games when the shots just wouldn’t fall for the Lady Tigers, the Lander Valley girls varsity basketball team fell to Wheatland 46-34 Saturday morning.

    Wheatland scored the game’s first five points and the Lady Bulldogs held LVHS to one shot in the opening five minutes. Both teams were plagued by turnovers throughout the game, and Wheatland led 12-7 at the end of the first quarter.


    LVHS outscored the Lady Bulldogs 15-12 in the second quarter, bringing the Wheatland lead to within one possession at halftime, 24-22.

    The morning after a thrilling Lander win in the tournament opener, early second half indications pointed to a similar ending on Saturday. But Lander’s shooting went cold, and WHS began to pull away.

    Serenity Jones closed the third quarter with a three-point play for Wheatland, expanding the Lady Bulldogs lead to 10 points.

    WHS maintained the double digit lead through the 2:00 mark of the fourth quarter. The Lady Bulldogs did the rest of their scoring work from the free throw line as Lander was forced to foul for possession.


    WHS’s Serenity Jones led all scorers with 18 points.

    Just four Lady Tigers registered points in the game: Hayden Googles (12), Kiara Friday (11), Kiera Lincoln (9), and Kyndal McFadden (2).

    Lander is now 1-1 in the Douglas Classic and 3-2 overall on the season.


    Unofficially, a combined 49 turnovers were committed in the game, 28 by Lander.
