Two oilfield workers wounded in accidental shooting
Yesterday, August 21st, at 7:45 a.m., Park County 911 Communication Center received a report of an accidental shooting at the Vision Quest Motel in Meeteetse.
Walter M. Hofer (35), and Jeremy J. Kleinsasser (19) are employed in the Gooseberry Oil Field and had just worked all night together when the incident took place. The two were talking about guns when Hofer produced a 9-millimeter semi-automatic handgun and was demonstrating how to disassemble for cleaning.
Hofer attempted to remove the slide of the weapon when it discharged through his left hand and continued through Kleinsasser’s hip (both wounds were “through” and “through”). Both were transported to West Park Hospital, their injuries were assessed, and they were subsequently released. The investigation determined that both victims were friends and had no history of animosity or violence between them.
Incidents such as these remind us of the upcoming hunting season and to practice gun safety and treat every firearm as if it were loaded.
