Thwarted beavers on the Middle Fork

(Lander, WY) – Several interested Lander residents, a few Rotarians, and representatives of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and the City of Lander took on some four-legged critters last weekend, according to Lander Rotarian Ken Richardson.

It seems as if some beavers have been wreaking havoc on the cottonwood trees along the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie River, he explained, and something needed to be done to curb their enthusiasm.

Since giving them a citation for vandalism probably wouldn’t phase the tree gnawing rodents and they’d likely eat the paperwork anyway, another plan was devised.

Wrapping the trees with wire seems to have worked elsewhere and so that became the plan to help out the trees and to outfox the critters.

“Well, at the end of the morning, it appeared that it was the trees 1 and the beavers 0 as wire cages were erected around still healthy cottonwoods,” Richardson noted.

Another volunteer commented, “chew on that you little wretches.”
