    Suspect involved in RPD gunfight has died

    The suspect who was involved in a shootout with the Riverton Police Department Thursday has died according to RPD and the Fremont County Coroner’s office.

    Riverton Police issued the following statement about the incident earlier Thursday:

    The Riverton Police Department has been working in conjunction with a Federal Agency on a convicted felon who was illegally possessing firearms and threatening Law Enforcement. Officers were in contact with the male subject today around 11:00 am at Monroe and 1st Street, the suspect fired upon officers who returned fire. The suspect was transported to the Sage West Hospital for injuries, No officers were injured.

    Police Chief Eric Murphy announced Thursday afternoon that, “the suspect in the shooting did succumb to his injuries and is deceased.”

    Fremont County Coroner Mark Stratmoen announced via a press release that, “fatalities caused, or suspected to be caused, by any law enforcement agency will require appropriate time to complete their investigations.” Stratmoen continued that information released on this death should not be anticipated from the Coroner’s office for “more than a month, at the earliest.” A full copy of the Coroner’s press release has been added below.

    The identity of the male subject is not being released at this time from law enforcement as well.
