Successful rabbit hunts in Shoshoni this weekend

(Shoshoni, WY) – This weekend was the 42nd annual Wyoming Women’s 5-Shot Rabbit Hunt. This event, which happens in Shoshoni on the second weekend of January, brings women from across Wyoming together for hunting, mentoring, and friendship.

This year’s event hosted three teams of two who set out at 7:30 am on Saturday morning to hunt rabbits. Despite the lack of sunshine and snow, all three teams were successful.

Taking 1st place for the second year in a row were KLa Watts and Jessica Casper. They harvested a total of six rabbits.

Coming in 3rd was Heidi Freeman and Linda Genner with three rabbits. They were unable to attend the Saturday evening awards dinner.

County 10 had the opportunity to catch up with longtime participant Joan Eisemann at the awards banquet. She has participated in the event since 1978 – taking a year off here and there.

We asked her what has kept her coming back all of these years and she shared it is the “camaraderie.” Her favorite part of the weekend is killing the rabbits or what she calls “gunpowder therapy.”

For those who might be interested in participating, Joan recommended just coming to experience it. “If you are not a hunter, come be a judge.” The judge is a queen for the day she explained. “We have a lot of girls that start out as judges and the next year they are hunting.”

Even though this year might not have been quite like previous years due to the pandemic, everyone is already looking ahead to the 43rd in 2022. You can stay up-to-date on event happenings by following the Wyoming Women’s 5-Shot Rabbit Hunt Facebook page.
