The Wyoming Senior Companion Program is accepting applications for Senior Companion Volunteers and Clients.

As people age, they may find themselves in a situation where they live alone and as time progresses, they find that they need more and more help to do the simple things in life in order to stay healthy, independent and at home. This may include going to doctor’s appointments, shopping, writing letters, keeping the house clean or just having someone to talk to about life in general. This is where the Wyoming Senior Companion Program can help.

This program is designed to connect volunteers 55 years of age and older with individuals who are elderly, medically fragile or shut-in. This partnership helps to bring companionship, friendship, and assistance to those who might miss out otherwise. Volunteers can help to provide companionship, help with writing letters or bills, light housekeeping, accompaniment to doctor’s visits, shopping, or help with connecting other needed services.

The Senior Companion Volunteer is valuable in the care and support of our clients, especially in rural communities. There is no charge for our services to the client or a client’s family. Clients report that Senior Companions help prevent or delay long-term care placement, increase the client’s ability to live alone, reduce loneliness and isolation, and reduce stress levels.

Volunteers usually serve between 15-40 hours a week serving between 2-4 clients. Some of the benefits that the Companion receives through their service is a small tax-free stipend (for those who qualify), paid time off, paid holidays, and mileage reimbursement. Studies also show that by giving back to others the volunteers have an active sense of purpose, live longer, and report better health overall.

If you would like to know more about the program and how to become a volunteer or have questions about becoming a client, contact Kelly Shaffer at 307-856-6880 or email at [email protected].
