#Smiles: RMS Science Olympiad teams earned several medals at state

A series to share #smiles across our community through the achievements of our local youth, brought to you by Olsen Orthodontics.

(Riverton, WY) – Earlier this month the Riverton Middle School Science Olympiad team competed in the state competition held at Casper College.

“The Science Olympiad tournament consists of approximately eighteen separate events per division which may require an individual or groups from each school for competition. Competitive teams will require knowledge obtained in the classroom and/or preparation during the year.

“The events are both fun and challenging and often very motivational. The concepts and topics for the events are balanced between Science Facts, Science Concepts, Process Skills, and Technical Application. Although the Science Olympiad is a competitive activity, most events are team competitions which require teamwork and cooperation. The emphasis is on inquiry learning, participation, interaction, and having fun.”

This was coach Sarah Fanning’s first year teaching and coaching. She shared how proud she is of the students and that she can’t wait for next year.

“Team B received the Spirit Award which was selected by the judges. They showed each other so much support and truly demonstrated their love of science at the competition. Team A won second place and medaled in all but two events. We were really close to 1st place and will be working towards 1st place next year and will hopefully go to Nationals!”
