    #Smiles: Riverton High School Speech & Debate takes first at Bobcat Invite

    (Riverton, WY) – Riverton High School’s Speech and Debate team has begun competing in a virtual world for their 2020-2021 season.

    This weekend, the took top honors at the Hot Springs County Bobcat Invitational with 15 schools across the state competing in the online competition.

    Individually, Carolyn Thornton took first place in Poetry and Drama Interpretation and shared third place in Duo Interpretation partner Isaac Almejo-Ponce. Isaac took another third place this weekend and in the fun event of Humorous Interpretation.

    Kaia Tippets joined her teammates with a fourth place win in both Poetry and Drama Interpretation.

    In Program Oral Interpretation Abbie Lipson took second place and Shannyn Kreitzer placed 4th.

    In the debates there was a rare occurrence called a “Closeout.” This is where debate teams in the same school both make it to the final round and tie for first place. The first place winners in Cross Examination debate this weekend were partners Kylar Bennett and Nate Davis and partners Lizzy Pierson and JJ Grover.

    Coaches Annette Thornton and Becca Pierson shared that they were proud of their team for working hard in these less than ideal circumstances and happy that the team continues to stay strong. The team will compete this weekend in an online event hosted by Star Valley High School.
