#Smiles: Riverton High School Speech and Debate team preps to compete in first-ever online State competition

A series to share #smiles across our community through the achievements of our local youth, brought to you by Rendezvous Dental.

The following was shared with County 10:

With school activities and sports at a stand-still, the Riverton High School Speech and Debate team continues to strive for excellence and a sense of normalcy in their pursuits. The team is currently competing against other Wyoming schools online and officiated by judges from all around the country.

Although competing online via the Zoom app., the Wolverines haven’t lost their academic drive. The students have kept their competitive edge, even if they’re now competing from their living rooms.

Confirmation of their dedication and talent is evident through the recent announcement from the 2020 National Speech and Debate Association.

The national competition was set to be held in New Mexico, but due to the pandemic, has been rescheduled to an online competition. This year’s qualifiers from Riverton High School are Joseph Thornton in Dramatic Interpretation, Elizabeth Pierson in Congressional Debate, and partners Isaac Almejo-Ponce & Carolyn Thornton in Duo Interpretation. Also named was Savana Grace Whitehurst as 1st Alternate in Dramatic Interpretation and Program Oral Interpretation, Shannyn Kreitzer & Kaia Tippets as 2nd Alternates in Duo Interpretation, JJ Grover & Elizabeth Pierson as 3rd Alternates in Cross Examination Debate, Angel Carrillo & Kylar Bennett as 2nd Alternates in Cross Examination Debate, and Kylar Bennett as 4th Alternate in Congressional Debate.

Last, but certainly not least, the RHS Activities Director Reggie Miller was named by the Wind River District and National Speech and Debate Association as district Administrator of the Year.

We want to recognize our three graduating seniors this year, Joseph Thornton, Savanah Whitehurst, and Angel Carrillo. Thank you for sharing with us your example, intelligence, and grace. Good luck to all of you in your beautiful futures!

The RHS Speech & Debate team competes in Wyoming’s first-ever online State competition from April 22 – 25th through Zoom. Stay tuned for the results!

County 10 reached out to the LVHS Speech and Debate coach for information on their team’s standing. At this time, we have not heard back.
