#Smiles: RHS Speech and Debate claims top honors this weekend
The Riverton Speech & Debate team is off to an impressive start to their 2018-2019 season.
The first meet in November resulted in a second place win in 3A division. This past weekend they claimed first place in 3A. Contributing to the win was Jalon Tyndall who was third-place finisher in Lincoln Douglas debate and a semi-finalist in Congressional Debate. Carolyn Thornton claimed first place in Novice Humor and first in Novice Duo with Isaac Almejo-Ponce. Abigail Lipson took third place in Novice Humor Interpretation. Novice duo partners Collin McLaughlin and Kaia Tippits placed second. Additionally, Joseph Thornton was a semi-finalist in Dramatic Interpretation.
Kaia Tippits also placed sixth in Novice Drama Interpretation. Joseph Thornton took second place in Poetry Interpretation, fourth place in Humor Interpretation and along with partner Shannyn Kreitzer placed second in Duo Interpretation. Angel Carrillo earned his way into semis in Congressional Debate. Elizabeth Pierson was a semi-finalist in Poetry and also a semi-finalist in Congressional Debate.
Partners Perlene Keller and Angelique Throckmartin won first place in Novice Policy Debate. Perlene Keller was also a semi-finalist in Humor Interpretation.
Coach Annette Thornton said “Some of our strongest Wolverine competitors graduated last year, so we expect this year to be a building year. So far it looks like our young talented students are on track to be a competitive force for our varsity team this season.”
Coach Pierson says “The team this year is cohesive and supportive of one another, this helps to give us the strong bond we need to work as a team and gain strength from one another.”
The team continues their season in January at Northwest College in Powell and looks forward to an exciting and productive season.
