The Lander Middle School MathCounts Team won against teams from Rock Springs, Pinedale, and Green River on Friday, December 4th. Lander had two teams of four students in the competition and took home 1st and 2nd place.
“I haven’t seen gains like this since becoming the Math Counts coach,” Ely Sixbey shared with County 10 about the LMS team. “Improvement was off the charts.”
The top three in the individual competitions were Anne Butler who placed first overall, Brayden Groenke who placed 2nd overall, and Henry Wendt who placed 3rd overall.
Coach Sixbey credits the peer coaching staff for the improvements this year – which includes previous year State Champs Emily Anderson and Felicity Olsson. In addition, coach Scott Olsson, and also helping out is Kephas Olsson.
“There is just something about high school kids that return back to the middle school,” Sixbey said. “That relationship they build with the next generation; it’s just an amazing connection they can make.”
A big thank you was also shared for the community effort to make the competition happen locally. The National Honors Society volunteers, and the Lander Community Center. “Multiple people have come together to make something special happen for kids in an academic way.”
