The following was shared with County 10:
A trio of Lander Middle School athletes recently attended regional and national cross country meets in Colorado and Tennessee.
Eighth grader Diego Lobatos extended his season into November, competing at the Colorado AAU Area 20 District Championship Meet in Brighton. Lobatos raced to a first-place finish in the 14-year-old division.
On Saturday, December 7, fellow eighth grader Reed McFadden along with seventh grader Ameya Eddy ran at the AAU Cross Country National Championships in Knoxville, TN.
According to Misty Atnip — head coach of the Lander Middle School cross country teams — these races were fitting culminations to special seasons.
“LMS had a great season this year. The boys and girls were both conference champs,” Atnip said. “I always tell the kids that if they individually finish in the top 10 at conference, we could look at taking them to a regional meet in the area. However, this year the race that is usually held in Billings didn’t happen, so I dug a little deeper.
“It became obvious that a few of our runners had times that were comparable to those athletes who compete at the AAU National Cross Country Championships,” Atnip said of McFadden and Eddy. “Reed and Ameya signed up and committed to training an extra two months from the end of our school season, which included some not so pleasant running weather.”
In the boys 13-14 4K race, McFadden finished 28th in a field of 248 runners. His time of 14:21 was good enough for 15th place in the 13-year-old age group. The girls 11-12 3K race sported a field of 236 runners. Eddy placed 58th with a time of 12:48 and was 33rd among 12-year-old girls.
Lobatos and McFadden will move on to compete for the Lander Valley High School cross country team next fall, while Eddy returns to LMS to race as an eighth-grader.
