#Smiles: Lander Middle School MathCounts team take 1st at Regionals

A series to share #smiles across our community through the achievements of our local youth, brought to you by Rendezvous Dental.

Earlier in February, we shared the Lander Middle School (LMS) MathCounts team had qualified for the Southwest Regional Competition. Unfortunately, weather and bad roads kept the LMS MathCounts team from competing in Rock Springs.

However, MathCounts rules allow for teams to compete in other regional competitions around the state when weather conditions interfere. So they were able to join the Central Regional Competition last Saturday, shared LMS MathCounts Coach Ely Sixbey. “We were so relieved to hear the news!”

They headed to Casper College last weekend for the Central Regional Competition where they competed against Shoshoni and Casper.

There they took 1st and six of the team members qualified for State. Pablo Rangitsch, Emily Anderson, Felicity Olsson, and Anne Butler is the top team, Ely explained. Our two top individuals are Brayden Groenke and Nick Long. Coach Olsson and I couldn’t have been more proud of our mathletes and the way they represented Lander Middle School and the community in which we live.”

The State Competition is on March 7th at the University of Wyoming. We always look forward to the trip and touring the new engineering facilities,” Ely said. “The Wyoming Society of Professional Engineers in partnership with college instructors and engineering students always put on a nice display showcasing their program. I personally am fascinated with their robotics and drone technologies. MathCounts has provided our students and myself wonderful opportunities to learn and grow.”

    Good luck at State!!!
