#Smiles: 25 Lander swimmers honored this week

A series to share #smiles across our community through the achievements of our local youth, brought to you by Olsen Orthodontics.

(Lander, WY) – On February 4th, the Lander Swim Club paid special tribute to their Top 5 Award recipients. Lander Swim Club Coach Jennifer Hudson Schaff shared the following information about the 25 Lander Swim Club swimmers who achieved this honor including 3 individual event state records and 1 relay state record.

Wyoming Swimming, Inc gives The Top 5 Award to the fastest 5 swimmers in each event by age group and gender for the 2019-2020 swimming season. Swimmers from Wyoming Swimming are usually honored at a banquet in November, however, with the pandemic the celebrations were a little more individualized by community and also virtual. 

“The swimmers received their certificates and awards outside in the cold wearing masks in a quick ceremony as the team is very conscientious of following social distancing rules since the high school boys are working toward their 25th consecutive high school championship,” Jennifer shared.

The state record holders included Brayden Brown, Dylan Huelskamp, Nolan McFadden, and Jonny Kulow for their 15-16 200 yard freestyle relay. In addition, Jonny Kulow also broke state records in the 15-16 boys 100 yard free (which he set 3 times in the same season) and the 100 yard fly. During this season, Jonny also qualified for and attended the USA Swimming Junior Nationals in Federal Way, WA, and also swam in a COVID-substitute for junior nationals this season in St. George, Utah.

Swimmers are training for the next few meets:

• Saturday, February 6 – 3A East High School Boys Conference Championships – Lander
• Fri/Sat  February 19-20 – 3A High School Boys Swimming and Diving Championships, Laramie
• Fri/Sat February 27-28 – Big Horn Basin Conference Championships, Powell
• Fri-Sun March 19-22 – Speedo Sectionals, Phoenix, AZ
