Shoshoni is planning to restore its local softball field.
The details still have to be ironed out, but the town is working on acquiring the land from the Shoshoni Recreation District, which has been unable to maintain the softball field for several years due to a lack of funding.
Now, the town has offered to own and maintain the recreational space.
The property has to be used for outdoor recreation, since it was originally developed using National Park Service money, town attorney Marshall Keller said.
It doesn’t have to be a softball field, though.
Mayor Joel Highsmith said the town could create a walking park there, connecting with the nearby Rails-to-Trails pathway.
Other possibilities Highsmith mentioned included a BMX racetrack or a skate park.
Whatever the town comes up with, he said the property will “be more functional” and “better for recreation” – even if the parks department simply weeds and waters the softball field.
Shoshoni is looking into grants that could help pay for park developments, he said, and “there may be something (for) next year that we may be interested in.”
