Region IX Basketball: Rustler Men and Women on the road Wednesday at NWCC

    Quick Look:    Wednesday, January 23rd

    CWC teams travel to Powell to take on Northwest College.


    CWC Women (7-12 &1-3)  at Northwest (2-17 & 0-4)

    CWC Men (8-11 & 3-1) at Northwest (9-11 & 2-2)

    Central basketball teams are on the road for a third straight Wednesday when they go to Powell to take on Northwest College.   Both Rustler teams are looking to build on momentum. The men’s team has won three straight and find themselves in the top half of Region 9 at 3 and 1.    The women’s team stopped a six game losing streak with a win over Eastern Saturday and have won their first conference game to sit at 1-3.

    The Opponent:


    Both Trapper teams have interim head coaches.  *Their volleyball team also had an interim head coach this past season as well.

    The Northwest women are on a six game losing skid, four of which are Region 9 games.  They have lost 12 of their last 13 under interim coach Camden Levett.

    The Trapper men are 2 and 2 in league play.   They have won 2 straight, a one point win over Western and a 12 point win over Gillette.  Their losses came to LCCC and Eastern, two teams CWC has beaten in their last two games.


    Women’s Notes:

    Chasing History:   Paulani Tarawa scored 23 points on Saturday and took over the #2 spot in the modern day career scoring.  She passed Jolanna Sazue as 763. Tarawa has 765 and is 41 points behind the 806 of #1 on the list Courtney Patterson.

    Burmester Report:  Rylee Burmester tallied her third double-double of the season and her second in a row on Saturday.  Rylee needs to make 12 more free throws to overtake the #1 spot in modern day records for made free throws in a season.   #1 is Jolanna Sazue with 155.


    Men’s Notes:

    The Nelson Effect:    Connor Nelson played the first four games of the season for Central, but then sat out the next thirteen games injured.    In his two games back, he’s scored 30 points with 17 rebounds coming off the bench.

    Rotating of Lineup:   9 of the 10 players on the roster have all started 3 games or more.

    Little bit of history:


    This is the 21st meeting between Northwest and Central in the modern era.  Northwest leads the series 13 to 7 and has won the last 5 in a row.

    MEN:    This is the 21st meeting between CWC and the trappers since basketball was brought back to CWC.  Northwest leads the series 12 to 7 but Central was won the last two.

    Next Home Games:

    For the women and men, they return home January 26th in Region 9 play vs Sheridan. Game times see the women at 2 with the men’s game at 4 pm at Rustler Gym.  Sheridan’s men’s team is ranked in the top 15 nationally.. New NJCAA rankings are out Tuesday.
