Record setting day at Lander’s Bruce Gresly Invitational

Two-fourths of the way through the 400-yard freestyle relay at Saturday’s Bruce Gresly Invitational, it wasn’t a question of if a state record would be broken by the home team, it was by how much.

The energy of a raucous crowd helped push Lander anchor leg Caleb Huelskamp to the wall in 3:14.06, crushing the 23-year-old 3A state record by more than three seconds. The swim capped off a memorable two days of competition for the Tigers.

“It was a crazy awesome weekend for boys swimming,” coach Shawna Morgan said. “Not only did we break a state record that was set in 1996, we qualified two new athletes for state, bringing our total to 13. Big congratulations to Dominic Tejada for qualifying in diving and Elijah Applegate for qualifying in the 500 freestyle.” The two Tigers punched their state meet tickets during Friday night’s dual with Cheyenne South.

“Both of those performances propelled the team into many more amazing performances on Saturday,” Morgan said. “We had many more kids swim personal best times this weekend, which is so hard to do this time of the season.

“I’m starting to question if we’re working them hard enough, even though they would all say that we’re definitely working them too hard,” Morgan laughed.

Hard work helped the Tigers finish off the weekend in historic fashion with the relay victory.

“That 400 freestyle relay exceeded all expectations, just shattering that state record time previously held by Rawlins,” Morgan said, noting that all four LVHS swimmers swam splits under 50 seconds.

The Tigers host Riverton Thursday at 4:00, the team’s final home competition of the season. Lander’s four seniors — Bob Blunk, Huelskamp, Tejada and Wilson Winn — will be recognized prior to the dual.

Friday and Saturday LVHS travels to Campbell County for the Gillette Invitational.
