Parents, students to protest in Ethete today

(Ethete, WY) – At 2:00 pm today, January 15th several parents and students are planning to gather at the Tribal Office in Ethete to call for a decision from the Inter-Tribal Council about re-opening the schools on the Wind River Reservation.

Last spring, schools on the Wind River Reservation closed to in-person classes and students have been in remote learning since. The stay-at-home order has also remained in effect with a few restrictions modified over the summer.

According to parent reports shared with County 10, remote learning has been difficult for many students not only in learning but on their mental wellbeing. Part of this being the lack of socialization and participation in sports.

They are hoping the Inter-Tribal Council will make the decision to open the schools in a hybrid setting so all students will not be in school at the same time, but they will still be eligible for sports.

“The only people suffering from the stay-at-home order are the children,” one parent told County 10.
