High school students from across Fremont County and Lodge Grass, Montana had the opportunity to attend the Native American College & Career Readiness Summit at Wyoming Indian High School on October 22nd, 2019.

The Native American College & Career Readiness Summit Committee works year-round to bring students information about future pathways and Native American guest speakers. Teffany Fegler, Harmony Spoonhunter and Dave Hagger spearhead the committee with support from Fremont County Schools and the Wind River Casino.

Teffany shared, the summit stems from observing students attend traditional college fairs and not seeing very much engagement. This is the 5th year the Native American College & Career Readiness Summit has been in a conference-style with guest speakers, breakout sessions and booths.

This year’s guest speakers included one of the Native Wellness Institute Founders Robert Johnston and Wyoming House District 33, Representative Andi Clifford.

There were also 10 smaller, focused breakout sessions for students to pick from. Those sessions included: Scholarship/FAFSA, Job Seeking/Job Keeping Skills, Succeeding in College Athletics, Native Americans in STEM Careers, Medical Fields, Native Americans in Education, Job Corps, Military, Journey to College, and University of Wyoming Programs.

Approximately 30 colleges, businesses, and organizations from Wyoming and neighboring states had booths at the summit. They provided students with information about opportunities after high school including education, jobs, volunteering, military, etc…

The committee is already looking ahead to next year. Teffany noted, they could always use volunteers, financial support and ideas for the summit. If you’d like to help support or have ideas to share you can contact Teffany at 307-851-0847.
